 Parintins, Brazil

This small village is home to one of the largest celebrations, next to Carnival, in Brazil. The Parintins Festival has origins that date back to the religious and folkloric festivals of the Amazon region. The legend of the Boi-Bumbá is the backdrop to the festival. It tells the story of an ox that is killed, revives, and enchants everyone with its joy. Somewhere along the line it has become a challenge between the Red and the Blue. You must choose a side, and most allegiances go back for generations. A Red person would not be caught dead in blue and visa vera. It was discovered that the Blue team was drinking Coke from a red can. So now Coca Cola makes blue cans for the festival. Each team spends all year coming up with new dances, music and routines.  The Red team performs their routines in their outrageous costumes and the  Blue performs. There are judges who decide the winner.  That team is then the village ambassadors.  They perform for tourists and visitors. We were entertained by the Red team. It was an hour packed with more Bumba's than I've ever seen. Kyle enjoyed it immensely.
